چکیده

All symptoms and most objectively verified abnormalities among fibromyalgia (FMS) patients are characteristic of subsets of patients with hypothyroidism or partial peripheral thyroid hormone resistance. Laboratory tests have shown a higher-than-normal incidence of thyroid disease among FMS patients. Among 40 objectively verified abnormalities that also occur in hypothyroidism and peripheral thyroid hormone resistance, FMS patients have abnormally low resting metabolic rates and basal body 4 temperatures. In several open and blinded treatment trials, thyroid hormone therapy other than T -replacement has reduced or eliminated FMS symptoms and many study patients have ceased to meet the criteria for FMS. In addition, a 1-to-5-year follow-up study showed that patients treated with thyroid hormone remained improved and used fewer medications to control symptoms than did matched untreated controls. These study findings constitute rigorous testing of, yet failure to refute, the inadequate thyroid hormone regulation etiological hypothesis of FMS. Competing etiological hypotheses of FMS account for only a fraction of the symptoms and objectively verified abnormalities among patients, and no treatment other than thyroid hormone therapy has been shown to relieve patients of FMS status. This review of the published research literature shows that inadequate thyroid hormone regulation is the most likely underlying mechanism of the symptoms and objective abnormalities of patients who meet the criteria for FMS. 3 4,

The role-playing autoantibodies in autoimmune thyroid diseases and their extra-thyroidal manifestations: review article

The presence of the antibodies against the main thyroid antigens, which include thyroid peroxidase (TPO) or microsomal antigen, thyroglobulin (Tg) as well as thyrotropin receptor or Thyroid Stimulating Hormone Receptor (TSH-R), is a hallmark and symbol of the autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs) as one of the most common autoimmune diseases (AD) around the world. The prevalence of the thyroid pe...

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MODE OF DELIVERY AND NEONATAL THYROID HORMONE LEVELS AT BIRTH: A NARRATIVE REVIEW

Thyroid hormones are essential for normal development of fetus. After birth changes in thyroid hormone enable the neonate to be adapted for postnatal life. Accordingly, attention to the level of neonatal thyroid hormones at birth is important. Several maternal and environmental factors influence this adaption. Various studies have shown the association of different neonatal, maternal, and pregn...

The Role of miRNA Dysregulation in Thyroid Cancer Development by Targeting the Main Signaling Pathways

Thyroid cancer is one of the most common malignancies of endocrine glands, causing carcinomas, such as papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic thyroid carcinomas. Due to the significance of thyroid carcinomas, identification of the main signaling pathways and  the affecting mutations has been considered by researchers. Further studies on the dysregulation of oncogenes in signaling path...

Female fibromyalgia patients: lower resting metabolic rates than matched healthy controls.

BACKGROUND Many features of fibromyalgia and hypothyroidism are virtually the same, and thyroid hormone treatment trials have reduced or eliminated fibromyalgia symptoms. These findings led the authors to test the hypothesis that fibromyalgia patients are hypometabolic compared to matched controls. MATERIAL/METHODS Resting metabolic rate (RMR) was measured by indirect calorimetry and body com...

Lower Resting Metabolic Rate and Basal Body Temperature of Fibromyalgia Patients Compared to Matched Healthy Controls

Introduction. All symptoms and most objectively verified abnormalities of fibromyalgia are common among patients with hypothyroidism or partial peripheral thyroid hormone resistance. In treatment trials, thyroid hormone therapy has reduced or eliminated fibromyalgia symptoms, and a long-term follow-up study showed that improvement with thyroid hormone therapy lasted 1-to-5 years. In a previous ...
